What to do and see in Sendai
Here's what Tripadvisor UK says.
The model courses shown here are worth considering. Zuihoden Mausoleum, Osaki Hachimangu Shrine, and Sendai Castle Site are the three popular places to visit within the city center. All of these three sites are very close from the conference venue.
Hot springs (ONSEN) within Sendai city
Akiu and Sakunami are two very nice hot spring districts in Sendai. Although it is possible to stay at a hotel in Akiu and attend the JSHET conference, I reccomend you to stay at a hotel in city center on 21st May because it may not be convenient to get back to the hotel in Akiu late at night.
